Hamlin looks to back up Martinsville win with one at Darlington

Flagg named the AP men’s player of the year

It was a thumbs up kind of week on the lanes as we had a couple of bowlers come very close to posting 800 for series, starting off with DJ Pyfer who was bowling in the TNT league at Thunderbird Lanes a week ago last Thursday evening when he strung games of 269, 268 and 256 together for the association high series of the week of 793.

Jimmy Bomboy continued to dominate in the TNM at Twin Oaks, adding a 762 to his pin count for the year with scores of 246, 259 and 257.

And rounding out the top three was Lewis (LJ) Bailey of the Early Birds where secretary Gary Sammons reported Bailey stringing the front ten in game one of last week’s set.

Sammons said nerves likely played a part on the eleventh ball as he gave it an ‘oh so slight’ extra tug, leaving a two pin to convert for a super 289 game on his way to a league high 759 series.

That 289, followed by 246 and 224, ended up being the honor roll high game of the week.

Adult Highlights

Chad Perry was second best in the Early Birds with 721 on games of 225, 259 and 236 and Mark Hill followed DJ Pyfer in the TNT with a 720 on games of 225, 218 and 277.

720 was the high score in the Goodyear league where Tory Morales went 217, 258 and 245 to make up the total, followed by Michael Gillian with 711 thanks to a 274 closer, and Chad Perry ef-forts of a 705 that started off with a 269 game wrapped up the week’s top three.

Troy Hardin went 214, 236 and 269 for the His and Hers’ high of 719 and Malden Smith led in the Guy and Dolls with a 712 scored on games of 244, 226 and 242.

And last week’s headliner, Matt Casey, held up the Suburban league with a 708 that went 224, 267 and 217.

Youth Highlights

Ali Biscaino rolled a consistent 546 for the week’s youth high series, putting together games of 180, 180 and 186 and Aiden Nix scored the high game of the week of 201, both while bowling in the TBird Legends at Thunderbird Lanes.

DJ Scott took the reins in the TBird HotShots with games of 171, 150 and 134 for a 455 series off a 126 average and the TBird MiniShots (bumpers) reported a 112 game for William Hern and a 100 game for William Mullins.

No-Tap News

Gary Webster and Cathy Shuman were the No-Tap Champions of the week with Webster topping off his day with a no-tap 300 score while bowling in last Friday’s senior 9-Pin No Tap Colorama at Thunderbird Lanes.

Webster had games of 255 and 278 leading into the no-tap perfecto, giving him a 941 series with handicap.

Herbert Scott took second place in the men’s division with 895, followed by Cleo Travis’ 888.

Cathy Shuman had games of 222, 185 and 242 to take first place in the women’s division with an 865 total with handicap.

Malden Smith bowled well enough to win first place in the Scratch Singles event with an 801, followed by Mike Peckinpaugh, 750, and Herbert Scott, 730.

Strike pot winners were Kevin Pair, John Fortner, David Jones, Charles Norman, Mike Peckinpaugh and James Halstead and Mystery Doubles winners were as follows.

Herbert Scott with David Jones took first place in game one with 585 and second in game two with 620.

Meanwhile, Cleo Travis and Gary Webster were paired and took second in game one with 573, first in game two with 629 and first in game three with 627.

Cathy Shuman and Ken Knoff snuck in and nabbed second in game three with 612.

Honorable mention in Mystery Doubles goes to Leilani Wiggins and Charles Norman for a 611 that was third high in game two on this notably high scoring day.

There no winners in this week’s challenge shots.

This event is held every Friday afternoon at Thunderbird Lanes; starting at 1 p.m. Bowlers must be at least 50 years old with a verifiable average to participate.
