Elgin advanced 10 wrestlers and claimed the team claimed the team title Saturday in the Class 5A West Regional at Duncan High School.
The Owls scored 238.5 points to edge Chickasha with 236.5 points. Guthrie was third at 202, MacArthur was fourth with 179.5 and Duncan fifth at 160.
The Owls, who a week ago claimed their second straight Dual State title, picked up four individual titles with their upper weights, added three seconds, one third, one fourth and one fifth. The top five at each weight in the two regionals advance to state and those fifth-place finishers will meet the fifth-place finisher from the East in a wrestle-in session to start next week’s State meet at the State Fairgrounds Arena.
Taking titles for the Owls were Braxton Antuna at 144, Colyn Donnelly at 190, Ritson Meyer at 215 and Jace Williams at 285. Antuna, just a freshman, earned a 7-6 decision over MacArthur’s Christian Morales in a dandy finals match.
Donnlley earned a 5-1 decision over Wesley Silvis of Guthrie, Meyer decisioned Trae Kibble of Mac, 4-2, and Williams edge Nic Herendeen of Guthrie, 3-1, in the finals.
Cody Rowell’s Owls got seconds from freshman Talon Tahdooahnippah at 106, Hunter Jackson at 113 and Brice Martin at 120. Earning bronze for the Owls was George Tahdooahnippah at 175, while Gabe Dittmeyer was fourth at 157 and Kason Meyer fifth at 150.
Mac senior Braden Brown won the gold at 175, pinning Tyren Alexander of Chickasha in 2:25. Brown is a defending State champion for the Highlanders.
Mac also got thirds from Kaden Wallace at 138 and Skylar Red Elk at 165 and a fourth from Jake Noble at 106.
Duncan was able to crown a pair of champions as Kooper Kelly won the title at 150 with a 7-3 win over Cole Beier of Chickasha and Eli Ramerez who earned an 8-3 decision to win the title at 157.
Marlow coasts to 3A regional title
Marlow advanced 12 wrestlers and raced to the 3A West Regional title in the Outlaws’ Gym Saturday to set the stage for a big run at another State title next weekend.
The Outlaws of Coach Andy Howington scored 342 points to win the title over Berryhill which was a distant second at 190.5 points. Pawnee was third with 156, Hinton fourth at 131 and Comanche fifth at 118.
Claiming regional titles for the Outlaws were Tommy Miller at 113, Marcus Williams at 120, Kellert Kizarr at 132, Brantz Bateman at 144, Zach Dawson at 150, Cade Gilbert at 157, Lawson Knox at 176, and Brock Smith at 215.
Miller earned a 13-2 major decision over Berryhill’s Jackson Martin and Williams needed just 1:39 to pin Comanche’s Gage Jessen.
Kizarr beat Gant Browning of Kingfisher, 9-5, Bateman had a 14-3 major decision over Jagor Turner of Hinton and Dawson edged Grady Mittasch of Pawnee, 4-3.
Gilbert added a 5-2 decision over Pawnee’s Kolbe Novotny, Knox pinned Kanon Clift of Comanche in just 34 seconds at 176 and Smith pinned Little Axe’s Lane Gourley in 3:49.
Finishing second for the Outlaws was Justin Choate who lost a fall at 106. Freshman Jaxson Murray had a dandy match with Jaxon Sheppard of Kingfisher with it going to the wire before the Yellowjacket scored a 10-9 decision.
Jase Hunt of Marlow lost on a fall at 165 and Gage Hixon lose in the finals to Cash Warren of Perry in a 5-1 match.
Cache’s Crawford wins regional
Cache’s Logan Crawford edge Tuttle’s Chance Fisher, 3-2, Saturday to claim the 4A West regional title at 132 pound during Saturday’s action at Kingfisher High School.
Also qualifying for State were Tail Walsch who lost a decision at 120 in the finals, Charlie Shafer was third at 157 and Max Daly was fifth at 144.
