EDMOND—Oklahoma Christian used hot shooting in both games to take a Lone Star Conference basketball doubleheader from Cameron in the final action for both programs until after the holiday break.
The Lady Eagles earned a 59-53 divisional win over Cameron and the OC men exploded for a season-high in a 90-82 victory in the men’s contest.
The Aggies will be back in action on Jan. 3 at the Aggie Gym when Texas Woman’s will battle the CU women at 5:30 pm. The CU men will host Dallas Baptist the same night at 7:30 p.m.
Women start slow
Cameron women struggled in the early going, falling behind 10-0 and forcing Coach Jeff Mahoney to call a quick timeout. The Aggies were able to score just two points in the first quarter and lost the rebounding battle, 14-1.
Nakia Cullom got hot for the Eagles as they extended the lead to 15 at halftime.
Cameron finally got its offense untracked and sliced the OC lead to eight and force the Eagles to call time and regroup.
Cameron did not back down, pulling to within a possession with just three minutes left to play as Kloe Heidebrecht hit a 3-pointer to make it 49-46. The Cache product added a layup with 2:08 remaining to get the Aggies back within three again at 51-48 but the Eagles hit four big free throws to seal the outcome.
Shamica Smith led the Aggies with 19 points, Grace Alverson added 13 and Heidebrecht chipped in seven.
Eagles had hot hand
The Eagles were able to make 59.6 of their shots from the field and they were even better from long range, hitting 10-of-16 for 62.5 percent.
Keyondre Young led the Eagles with 32 points as the Aggies were unable to slow the hot shooting guard down.
Cameron, though, was able to make some big shots as well but the Eagles were able to push their lead to 54-40 at halftime. OC pushed the lead to 20 early in the second half but Cameron was able to cut the deficit to 11 with just under 13 minutes left but that’s where the comeback stalled.
Lavell Brodnex and Reggie Prudhomme did their best to keep the Aggies in the game, scoring 25 and 20 points, respectively. Brodnex drilled 9-of-13 shots from the field.
