New Duncan Police chief sworn into office

DUNCAN — The new Chief of Police for the Duncan Police Department is now in office.

Major Brian Attaway rose to the role of top cop Monday after he was officially sworn in by Municipal Judge Joe Enos as the City of Duncan Police Chief in a ceremony held at Duncan Police Department.

Joined by his family and friends, Attaway, a 25-year resident of the community who has been with the department since 2000, celebrated the appointment, said Loisdawn Jones, information officer for the City of Duncan.

Attaway first became a patrol officer at Duncan Police Department in 2000, and has served as a Field Training Officer, an Advanced Accident Investigator, a K-9 handler and as a member of the Special Response Team. Promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2007, he became a Patrol Lieutenant in 2009 and a Patrol Captain in 2011.

During his time as Patrol Captain, Attaway contracted the complete remodel of the National Guard Armory that was donated to the City of Duncan and renamed the City of Duncan Criminal Justice Complex. This complex is now the main training site for officers, firefighters, and emergency management for City of Duncan as well as for numerous agencies in the surrounding area. In January 2023 he received a promotion to major/assistant chief of police where he oversaw daily operations.

Attaway stated that he is honored to serve his community as chief of police and looks forward to continuing to work alongside the outstanding men and women of the Duncan Police Department.

In his new role as chief, he will oversee the operational and capital budgets of the entire department, which includes 51 certified officers, 15 support staff, and three animal control officers, Jones said.

Attaway succeeds Bo Walker who took over the post in January following the retirement of long-time Chief Danny Ford who served 22½ years with the Duncan department.
