The NAACP Lawton Branch #6131-B will host a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lawton-Fort Sill Hilton Garden Inn, 135 NW 2nd, according to local president Will Scott.
The idea to host the event was presented to the local NAACP branch by the Committee Chair, Phyllis Perry, who saw this as an opportunity to bring the community together and unite in prayer as we celebrate the King Holiday and reflect upon his enduring legacy and principles of nonviolence, Scott said.
The keynote speaker for the MLK Prayer Breakfast is Leon W. Russell, Jr. He is a native Floridian, and currently serves as Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors.
According to Scott, Chairman Russell has dedicated his life to fighting for human rights and has served on the National Board of Directors in various roles since 1990, including Assistant Secretary and Chair of the Convention Planning Committee.
Before joining the board, Russell served as president of the NAACP Florida State Conference of Branches for four years after serving for 15 years as the first vice president.
After 35 years of public service as the Director of the Office of Human Rights for Pinellas County in Clearwater, Fla., Russell retired in 2012.
During his time as a civil servant Russell was responsible for implementing the county’s affirmative action and human rights ordinances. These ordinances continue to ensure a racially and sexually diverse workforce and support the implementation of the county’s equal employment opportunity programs.
According to Scott, “our local NAACP Branch is honored to have our NAACP National Board of Directors Chairman as keynote speaker, and believe he will have an important message to impart to the Lawton-Fort Sill community.”
“The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is always a good time to reflect upon his love for humanity and principled belief that, ‘nonviolence chooses love instead of hate,’ and ‘love restores community and resists injustice,’” Scott said.
The event is opened to the public and limited tickets are available at a cost of $35 each.
