More than 140 individuals from Lawton and the surrounding communities took part in the local NAACP Branch #6131-B’s Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Oct. 12 in the Cameron University’s McCasland Ballroom.
According to NAACP Branch President, Will Scott, this is an annual fundraising event that helps to support mission-focused initiatives throughout the year. All members of the local Branch are unpaid volunteers.
Second Vice President Tony Washington served as Master of Ceremony during the banquet.
Greetings were expressed by members of the local Adult and Youth Branch; Lawton Mayor; and, NAACP’s State Conference President. Colors were posted and retrieved by the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, and music throughout the evening was provided by Lawton’s Gospel Recording Artist, Elder Charles Ellington. Several potted plants were presented to the Family members of NAACP members who lost loved ones over the past year, following a memorial video tribute honoring each of them.
Scott said this year’s 2024 NAACP national and local theme is: “NAACP – All In.” The banquet’s featured keynote speaker was Altus’ Vice Mayor and Ward III Councilwoman, Roberta L. Brady-Lee, who reminded those in attendance about the impactful legacy of the NAACP and those whose shoulders many of us are still standing on today. Expounding on the theme and actions needed to confront the many challenges that continue today, she encouraged those in attendance who agreed to respond by saying, “ALL IN,” in a series of calls and responses.
The event coordinator, Delores Raphel, who also serves as the Branch’s Membership Chair, recognized several individuals for their assistance in coordinating the event, as well as new life members of the NAACP, city officials, businesses, organizations and individuals who provided support as paid table sponsors, and those who purchased advertisement and tickets.
Scott also presented Presidential Awards to local branch members for providing above and beyond contributions as volunteers.
The Voter Empowerment Chair, Robert McClain, gave an appeal to those in attendance to vote during the upcoming general election.
The event concluded with the retrieving of The Colors, singing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and the Benediction.
