A Comanche County jury trial slated to determine a Lawton man’s fate for a 2020 shooting into an occupied house was derailed before it could begin.
Quamail Quameer Willis, a.k.a., Quameil Quameek Willis, 22, was slated to begin trial Monday in Chief District Judge Scott D. Meaders’ courtroom for felony charges of discharging a firearm into a dwelling and possession of a firearm after delinquent adjudication, records indicate.
However, during jury selection and during instruction for the case before them, Meaders announced the charge for possession of a firearm after delinquent adjudication, causing him to declare a mistrial. The case was to be bifurcated, meaning it was to be divided into two stages so as not to prejudice the jury regarding prior convictions, according to law.cornell.edu.
Willis is accused of a March 2020 shooting into a home in the 2400 block of Northwest 42nd Street after it had been shot “numerous times while the residence was occupied by two juvenile children,” along with an adult nephew, according to the probable cause affidavit. No one was injured in the incident.
Willis was adjudicated as a delinquent child of assault with a deadly weapon in Tarrant County, Texas, in June 2017, records indicate.
Willis was arrested and made his initial appearance Sept. 29, 2020, in Comanche County District Court for the shooting. He received a $35,000 bond for that case. He also appeared for a different case for felony charges of possession of a firearm after delinquent adjudication and gang-related offense, as well as misdemeanor charges of obstructing an officer (two counts) and possession of controlled dangerous substance, records indicate. He remains in the Comanche County Detention Center on $1.35 million bond for the two cases.
The trial will be rescheduled for a later docket.
