It might be time to start asking some of these offensive line coaches to share their next “OL dinner night” with the media because after listening to them describing the fixins at a Mac offensive line cookout, my taste buds got active.
Mason Hanna is the starting right guard for the Highlanders and Jordan McCoy is the starting Mac center and Friday those two will be the middle of the action when Mac faces Elgin in the District 5A-1 feature game at Owls’ Stadium.
Hanna is 6-2, 275, and he moved from the Lawton High School district and showed up at Mac his sophomore season.
“I wasn’t always a good lifter but I learned pretty quick and the more I did it the more I loved it,” Hanna said. Then as a guard I pull a great deal and have to use my strength and quickness to pull and reach my guy.
Hanna has the size but for McCoy it was more about just learning a program in little time.
“I was living in Silom Springs and I was supposed to come back but then we had COVID and I grew a good deal,” he said after moving here this summer. “I was able pick up all the line calls pretty fast and I came every day and earned my position. I came and gave 110 percent each day. I worked with coach (Michael) Pooschke and Coach (TJ) FIaioa and they helped me with the footwork and technique.”
McCoy was still trying to put his finger on what happed against Midwest City when the Highlanders struggled to get anything going and lost a 42-7 decision.
“That was just a horrible effort,” he said. “I think we came back in the next game and played much better against El Reno. If this bunch plays together we can play with anyone.”
Hannah is a good student who enjoys English, especially literature.
“I’ve just always enjoyed the literature,” he said. “There’s several things that I enjoy reading them. I haven’t done much writing yet.”
Hannah said the Mac line has really played well this season and he enjoys getting a chance to pull,” he said. Our coaches do a great job with our technique at getting us ready.”
Oddly enough both the offensive linemen said their favorite food is the chicken alfredo their mom’s make for them.
However, McCoy was not ready to claim a favorite, saying “I haven’t tasted his mother’s alfredo yet.”
McCoy said that Friday’s game is a big one for the team but that each week is a big game.
“That’s how we’ve tried to take each week,” he said. “We have gone into each game just wanting to take care of that game and then move to the next.”
While Hanna knows Friday’s game will be a tough one, he says Mac is ready.
“We just want to come out and stay focused and just do what we’ve been taught to do,” he said. “Our line is just going to stick together and help move the football.”
After that those two can see what is being served at their next lineman gathering.
