Friday night’s Class 2A district matchup featuring Marlow and Lindsay was an offensive showcase for the Outlaws as they leave Lindsay scoreless, winning 52-0.
Marlow head coach Matt Weber was pleased with how his team has played so far this season and sees the first district win as a step in the right direction.
“It’s nice to set yourself up in districts winning the first game. I feel like (Lindsay) will be a playoff football team they’re just beat up a little right now,” said Weber. “I thought our guys came out and executed from the get-go. We had a great week of practice, so we should’ve played that well.”
He gives credit to the team’s ability to work together and prepare for games as the driving factor for good football.
“They all like each other and they’re very unselfish. The main thing is how we prepare. We don’t have a bad practice; our kids enjoy what we do. I love the way they prepare, and it showed tonight.”
Blayd Harris had an outstanding night throwing the football, converting on 9 of his 14 passes in the first half, two of those passes good for touchdowns. His first passing touchdown came on first down from Marlow’s own 40-yard line. Harris found receiver Jacob Crowson downfield who carried it to the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown.
Marlow showed their confidence while up two touchdowns by converting on a reverse pass play with 8:34 left to go in the second quarter. The play started with Harris handing the ball of to Keller Kizzar who found receiver Boomer Brooks wide open downfield to convert for a touchdown. That play added to Marlow’s lead making it 21-0.
The second passing touchdown from Harris came with 2:54 to go in the half. Again, Harris showed his vision, finding Brooks for a 58-yard touchdown play. Before the half was finished, Marlow managed to convert on a field goal with five seconds left, making the score at halftime 38-0.
The second half of the game Marlow was able to get some substitutes in to finish the job. Substitutes included Brett Wolfe at quarterback, running back Brennan Harris, and running back Sam Waller. Touchdowns in the second half came courtesy of a 47-yard carry from Waller and a 30-yard defensive touchdown from Kyler Blundell from a recovered fumble for the last score of the night.
As far as his hopes for the rest of the season, Weber believes in his squad and their ability to go far in the post season. For him, each week is an opportunity to improve.
“We certainly hope we have a playoff football team; we have seven games to go and a lot of football to play. Our goal is the old cliché of getting better every week and we’ll see where that puts us at the end of the year.
Marlow’s record now sits at 3-1 and the Outlaws are undefeated in their first district game. Next week, the Outlaws will travel to Lexington for their second district matchup.
