MacArthur senior defensive back AJ Vaughn says that the Highlander squad is a close-knit unit that he thinks will make it far once the post season starts.

“I play with my best friends. I get to hang out with my teammates every day and put in the work together. When we suit up on Friday nights the feeling is amazing.”

Going into districts the Highlanders have a record of 3-1 after a tough loss early in the season to Elgin. Since then, the Highlanders haven’t lost a game and look to continue their streak in district play Friday when they visit Oklahoma City to face Classen SAS. Last week MacArthur had a bye week and saw no action, but that allowed time for recovery.

“I feel good. We took a lump early and we needed that loss as a team, and we’ve gotten better since. I’m really looking forward to our future in districts,” said Vaughn. “We still got after its last week. Practices were normal and we had some time to let guys recover and get healthy leading up to this week.

Vaughn is in leadership classes and is also a member of the MacArthur basketball team. Following high school, Vaughn looks to play football in college and become a coach.

“I’m going to play college football and see how far it takes me,” he said. “I want to coach football afterwards and study psychology in college.

Vaughn says that the Highlanders are looking towards the next game with the same focus that they had in the last. Each game from here on out is important and he has confidence in his squad.

“We’re taking it as any other game. No game is important than another, we have to take them all seriously. We need to come correct, and ball out,” said Vaughn. “I think our future is bright and we can put anything we put our mind to. We have a good chance in districts if we keep playing well and I have full confidence in our team.

One thing Vaughn is going to miss about MacArthur football and specifically this year’s team is the brotherhood. His team is a close group and they show their chemistry on the field.

“I love the brotherhood between our team. I’ve never been a part of a team so close. We hangout every day, we’ve played together since we were kids, and we want to make this last ride count and give it our all.”
