DETROIT—Jake Bates kicked a 35-yard field goal on the final play of the game as the Detroit Lions continued their banner season with a wild 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The game was back and forth throughout and when the Packers got a touchdown from Josh Jacobs just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter they owned the lead, 28-24.
But the Lions countered on their next drive, marching 70 yards on 10 plays, the score coming on a Jared Goff 1-yard pass to Tim Patrick as the Lions pulled in front, 31-28.
Jordan Love and the Packers were able to move 56 yards downfield on nine plays on their next possession but the drive bogged down and Brandon McManus kicked a 32-yard field goal to tie the game a 31-all with 3:38 remaining.
The Lions took the ensuing kickoff with 3:38 remaining and methodically marched downfield on 11 plays to set up Bates for the game winner on the game’s final play.
Goff had a huge game, connecting on 32-of-41 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns.
Both defenses were tough against the run.
