Lawton High School’s boys basketball team had little trouble ending its 2-game losing streak Tuesday night and then did some scoreboard watching.

The Wolverines routed Classen SAS, 77-49, then watched for updates from the big matchup between Del City and Midwest City. The two clubs had to go to overtime before the Bombers earning a tough 77-74 victory that made the race for the district title even tighter.

LHS and Del City came out of the critical evening tied atop the district standings with 9-2 records while Midwest City moved to 8-3 and leave some exciting games before the end of the regular season.

The Wolverines have three regular-season games remaining including a road contest at Duncan Friday. After that LHS has games with Western Heights and John Marshall. Del City still has games remaining with Western Heights, Classen and Duncan, while MWC faces John Marshall, Altus and Classen.

Unless there is a huge upset next week it looks like LHS and Del City could wind up tied for the title, but if they do finish tied, both would be hosting regional tournaments in Class 5A.

MacArthur, which is in District 5A-1, had little trouble Tuesday, beating Elgin, 79-55, to stay in the thick of the title race in that district. El Reno leads that district at 10-0 with Mac and Carl Albert tied for second at 8-2.

El Reno, however, still has games remaining against Mac and Carl Albert, so that title may go down to the wire. Mac has a golden opportunity to aid its cause when El Reno comes to Lawton next Tuesday for an important game. And El Reno also has another game remaining against Carl Albert so anything can happen in that race.

Eisenhower’s young boys team is fighting to survive in rugged 6A, dropping a 73-44 decision to Choctaw last night.

In city girls action Tuesday, MacArthur beat Elgin, 53-42, to go to 6-4 which puts the Highlanders fourth in their district behind Carl Albert (10-0), El Reno (8-1) and Guymon (6-3).

The schedule seems to aid Mac’s bid as it visits Southeast Friday but then closes the season with four straight home games including El Reno and Guymon, giving the Highlanders a chance to gain ground.

Ike’s girls lost a 61-48 game to Choctaw last night as the Eagles continue to fight to improve in the tough 6A district.
