Ward 7 residents will go to the polls Tuesday to select a City Council representative.
The runoff election is giving that ward a choice between incumbent Councilwoman Onreka Johnson and challenger Sherene L. Williams. The women proceeded to the Nov. 14 runoff after winning the most votes in the Sept. 12 primary election. The runoff was necessary because none of the four primary candidates won the 50 percent plus one vote margin needed for an outright win.
The winner of Tuesday’s race will be sworn into office for a three-year term on Jan. 8, along with Ward 8 Councilman Randy Warren (who won re-election Sept. 12) and Ward 6 Councilman Robert Weger. Weger’s opponent, Jacobi Crowley, was ruled ineligible to run for office by the Comanche County Election Board because he had not been a registered voter at his address in Ward 6 for the six-month period specified in city charter.
Johnson, who works with youth, is seeking her third term in office. Williams is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and combat veteran who also has been a local businesswoman.
Residents must be registered voters in Ward 7 to vote in Tuesday’s election.
