The guardian of 5 and 6 year old children is wanted for allegations of child abuse.
Police said she told them she “was not in control of her emotions.”
The Comanche County District Court issued a felony arrest warrant Friday for Amber Cook, 35, of Lawton, for two counts of child abuse, records indicate. Each count is punishable by up to life in prison.
Lawton police were called Dec. 4, 2024, to a local elementary school regarding possible child abuse. The children’s grandmother told police when she picked the children up for school that morning, the 5 year old had a bloody nose she said was caused by Cook slapping her in the face, the warrant affidavit states. The grandmother showed photos she took of the child’s injuries from that day as well as of the 6 year old from a spanking incident that left the child bruised on his back, neck, chest and arms, from July 2024, Detective Sedona Warren stated.
The children told investigators Cook had hit them with a belt, a shoe and her hand and that they’d had bruises, marks and bloody noses more than once from her abuse, according to the affidavit.
Cook spoke with Warren on Jan. 13. She said she’d lost her temper on more than one occasion with both children, causing injuries multiple times. She gained custody of the children in November 2020 when they were 2 and 3 years old and the abuse began about a year later, the affidavit states. She said the children’s attitudes when they’d return from visiting the grandmother hurt her feelings and she began to feel like a “babysitter,” Warren stated.
During the interview, Cook said that after the July 2024 incident, she no longer wanted to touch the belt because she could “kill him” and she was not in control of her emotions, the affidavit states.
