A Lawton police officer is in stable condition after being injured in an early-morning chase Sunday.
Officer Marcus Ward sustained serious injuries during the 3:30 a.m. Sunday chase on West Lee Boulevard. In a statement, police said Lawton officers were responding to a crime in progress at 215 SE Interstate Drive and when they attempted to apprehend the suspect, that suspect fled in a vehicle. Responding officers activated their lights and sirens and gave chase.
The eluding suspect led officers to West Lee Boulevard, and when the chase neared the 5600 block, Ward lost control of his vehicle and collided with a utility pole, police said. Police terminated the pursuit at that point, officers said.
Ward sustained serious body injuries and after being extracted from his vehicle, was airlifted to an Oklahoma City hospital.
Police said early Monday afternoon that Ward was in stable condition.
The incident is under investigation and the initial call for service is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division. Lawton Police Department will release more information as it becomes available, officials said.
