A Lawton man is in jail on $30,000 after he was charged with stabbing his brother who lives with him.
Armour Beltran-Mendia, 58, made his initial appearance Wednesday in Comanche County District Court where he reeived a felony charge of assault, battery, or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, records indicate. The crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison or one year in county jail.
Lawton police were called shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday to a stabbing call at 615 SW Washington. Officer Corey Bowen stated the victim was on the ground with Beltran-Mendia lying next to him and he was taken into custody while aid was rendered to the other man, the probable cause affidavit states. Beltran-Mendia had blood on his legs and shorts but no injuries and said he didn’t need medical attention.
The wounded man told police he lived with his brother, Beltran-Mendia, and before the stabbing, he tried to take his brother to Jim Taliaferro Community Mental Health Center, according to the officer. At one point, Beltran-Mendia got up off the couch, got a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his brother in the chest, the affidavit states. The men fought over the knife while awaiting police after the injured man used a Hey Google feature on his phone to call 911, Bowen stated.
Held on $30,000 bond with the order he have no contact with his brother, Beltran-Mendia returns to court at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 17, 2025, for his preliminary hearing.
