Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce President and CEO John Michael Montgomery resigned from his position Friday morning.
Montgomery met with board chair Austin Rabon Friday morning to discuss his position, said Brad Winfree, Membership Coordinator for the Chamber. Following the meeting, he offered his resignation.
Rabon, who is acting president and CEO, said during the visit, Montgomery expressed his deep gratitude toward the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce and the community. At this time, he has chosen to pursue new opportunities, he said.
“On behalf of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce, we extend our sincere appreciation to John Michael for his contributions to the Chamber and his service to our community,” he said. “His innovative ideas and leadership have left a lasting impact on our local businesses and members, helping to shape the future of our organization.”
Montgomery was formally voted into the position July 6, 2023, by the chamber’s Board of Directors, following a recommendation made by the chamber’s executive board. While the executive committee vote was unanimous, five members of the Board of Directors voted “no” on Montgomery’s selection
In accepting the position, Montgomery resigned his District 32 State Senate seat he had held since 2018. His job as chamber president/CEO began Aug. 1, 2023.
Montgomery told The Constitution the resignation’s timing “…just felt like the right moment in time.” He said he’s very grateful for the chance he’s had. He plans to pursue private interests and figure out what next he’ll do.
“I’m grateful and thankful to the Chamber for the opportunity,” he said. “It was the right time to pursue other opportunities.”
Rabon offered warm wishes for Montgomery and the organization’s future.
“We wish John Michael all the best in his future endeavors and look forward to the continued growth and success of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce,” he said.
