STERLING – Sterling’s Lady Tigers rebounded from a devastating loss last week to post a big 71-24 victory over Cement Tuesday night.
Four days earlier, Sterling was beaten down by No. 4 Cyril, 75-33, in a Class A game.
But on Tuesday, Sterling played more consistently and walked away with its fifth win against two losses. Senior Emma Nunley led the charge with 34 points as the Lady Tigers held a 29-11 lead after the first period. Nunley tallied 13 of her points in the first quarter and then knocked down another 10 in the second period as Sterling led 43-20 at halftime.
Nunley stayed on course with 11 of the team’s 18 third period points as Sterling pushed its lead to 61-22 entering the final period. Cement scored only four points in the second half.
Sterling’s Shelby Spence added nine points to the winning effort followed by Lanie Merritt with eight and Ashlyn Clift with five points. All total, 10 different Lady Tigers scored against Cement.
Sterling is playing in the Geronimo Dome Classic this week and was pitted against Geronimo Thursday. Results of the game were not available at press time. If Sterling won, the Lady Tigers would play the winner of the Frederick-Snyder game 6 p.m. Friday. If Sterling fell to the loser’s bracket, the Lady Tigers would play the loser of the Frederick-Snyder game at 10 a.m. Friday.
Sterling continues its season Dec. 13 at Fort Cobb before returning home to play Apache on Dec. 16.
Cyril 75, Sterling 33
Consistency by No. 4 ranked Cyril left Sterling playing catchup the entire game as the home team held a 38-11 halftime lead.
Cyril scored 19 points in the first three periods before tallying 18 in the final eight minutes.
Sterling’s leading scorer was Nunley with 13 points, 11 of which were scored in the second half. Morgan Curry tallied nine points while Clift scored eight.
Meanwhile, Cyril had three players in double figures while also knocking down 11 three-point shots.
