OXNARD, Calif. — Only one padded practice remains in what has been one of the longest camps in Cowboys history.
Jerry Jones came down from the tower that stands between the two practice fields to chat with the media Tuesday afternoon. The owner of the franchise spoke of extensions not done, what has impressed him most from this camp and work that still needs to be done.
The conversation, as it has since the team arrived in Southern California 29 days earlier, began with the player who didn’t report.
CeeDee Lamb’s holdout continues. The receiver seeks an extension that will vault him to the top — or near the top — of the pay scale at his position.
Jones characterized the talks as promising. While he didn’t disclose details or offer a timeline, he made it clear the two sides were at least in the same neighborhood.
“No update as far as any(thing) near,’’ Jones said. “Again, wouldn’t be where we are with our numbers if we didn’t plan on signing him.’’
The same applies to quarterback Dak Prescott, who is in camp in the final year of his contract.
“We’re just continuing to talk,’’ Jones said. “Practicing, operating under his existing contract, which is good.
“You know, one of the things I would like for our fans to really understand is nine times out of 10, these are existing contracts you have in place. You should be able to operate under those.’’
Sensing his comment could be construed as a swipe at Lamb’s holdout, Jones quickly added how you see it happening around the NFL. He then stressed how neither side wants this to linger and impact the start of the regular season in less than three weeks.
So much for the player not here. What players in this camp have jumped out to Jones?
“Pointedly, I’m excited about our offensive line,’’ Jones said. “I’m excited about the individual players. I’m excited about the depth there. I’m excited about the youth there. All of that.
“That’s critical. It’s vital to us to have the running game. The other night, I know it was pre-season, but I was impressed by the way we pushed around that team (Las Vegas) the other night.
“Our offensive line is the thing that would come to my mind.’’
One other unit has gotten the owner’s attention.
“Right behind our offensive line for me, I’d say I’m impressed with the way our secondary is playing,’’ Jones said. “All of the corners, nickels, safeties. I’m real pleased with where we are there. Knock on wood.
“And (Trevon) Diggs back, getting that interception out here today. Those are all feel goods.’’
Defensive line is a position that remains unsettled. The additions of veterans Jordan Phillips and Carl Lawson in the past week likely won’t be the last.
“We’re probably not though there in terms of a face,’’ Jones said. “But be that as it may, that’s an area I like some of the players we’ve brought in over the last couple of weeks.’’
