DUNCAN — A Stephens County jailer is free on $25,000 bond after being charged for a sexual relationship with an inmate.
Christi Gail Baird, 58, of Duncan, made her initial appearance Thursday in Stephens County District Court where she received felony charges of second-degree rape and sexual battery, records indicate. The rape charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Benjamin Reed stated the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office requested OSBI assistance with the case on March 3.
Reed spoke with the inmate who said Baird gave him a phone number in October 2024 and they began texting each other through the jail inmate phone system, known as Prodigy Solutions; he said Baird had set up an account under the name Brenda Smith, the probable cause affidavit states.
While a trusty, the inmate said Baird would take him to a storage room to get supplies and they kissed on Thanksgiving last year, Reed stated. He said a short time later, they had their first sexual encounter, the affidavit states.
In January, the inmate said, he told Baird he didn’t want to continue the sexual relationship and she got mad so they had sexual relations a couple more times after that, according to the affidavit. Copies of the text messages were provide to the agent and the phone number returned to Baird. An account transaction from Dec. 19, 2024, showed it was deposited from Baird’s credit card account, Reed stated.
During a March 13 interview, Baird admitted to the sexual relationship with the inmate as well as to making the account under the name of Brenda Smith as well as communicating with him and placing money into his account, according to the affidavit.
As part of Baird’s bond conditions, she is to have no contact with the inmate and may not communicate with jail staff regarding the case. She returns to court at 9 a.m. May 14 for her preliminary hearing conference, records indicate.
