A Lawton man will serve 25 years in prison for the August 2023 beating death of an inmate while in the Comanche County Detention Center.
On Tuesday, Markie Montrell “Smoke” Ishman, 33, of Lawton, pleaded guilty in Comanche County District Court to a felony count of first-degree manslaughter after former felony conviction, records indicate.
Chief District Judge Grant Sheperd sentenced Ishman to 30 years with the Department of Corrections with 25 years to serve and the balance suspended as well as $29,2704.75 in fines, court costs and victim’s restitution.
Ishman was charged with three other men for the Aug. 16, 2023, beating death of Matthew Jones, 30, while all were housed in the Comanche County Detention Center. According to the probable cause affidavit, Jones suffered several hemorrhages and hematomas.
Four other men were charged with the same crime on Sept. 22, 2023: Kashif King,, Calvin Lykell Christopher Riss, Edward Rendardo Brown, and Danquantae Shonn Delaney, all of Lawton.
The five men are accused of taking Matthew Jones, 30, into a cell in the jail on Aug. 16, 2023, where he was beaten to death.
Jones had been in the Comanche County Detention Center since June 1, 2023, after being charged with a misdemeanor count of breaking and entering into a dwelling without permission, records inmate.
Riss was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty July 12 for a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia after receiving a two year suspended sentence in November 2022 to felony counts of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of controlled dangerous substance. He is slated to be tried for the manslaughter charge during the February/March 2025 jury trial docket.
Ishman and Riss also are accused of taking part in an Oct. 13, 2023, assault in the jail that left two inmates wounded.
On Tuesday, Ishman pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as conspiracy to commit assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Sheperd sentenced him to three 10 year sentences, all to be served concurrently with each other and the manslaughter sentenced.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Ishman stabbed at least one inmate with a shank smuggled into the jail.
Investigators allege that Ishman and Calvin Donshell “50/50” Wynn conspired to commit the attack and that the weapon was found in possession of Riss.
