Hilliary companies to launch broadband expansion in Southwest Oklahoma

BRAY — Oklahoma’s Broadband Office has helped launch a new series of high-speed internet expansion projects for Southwest Oklahoma through a partnership with Hilliary.

The projects, funded with $43.2 million in federal grants administered by Oklahoma Broadband Office (OBO), will be coupled with $22.8 million in matching funds from companies under the Hilliary brand, including Medicine Park Telephone, Oklahoma Fiber Network, Oklahoma Western Telephone, Phoenix Long Distance, Southern Plains Cable, Southwest Oklahoma Telephone and Texhoma Fiber.

The program was officially launched last week during a ceremony near Bray in Stephens County.

Officials said the projects will connect 2,007 homes and businesses with broadband internet using fiber optic technology. The awards from America Rescue Plan Act State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds were made earlier this year by the Oklahoma Broadband Governing Board. The Southwest Oklahoma project is the latest to be launched, with Hilliary projects scheduled in 11 counties: Comanche, Atoka, Cotton, Grady, Jackson, Kiowa, Latimer, Le Flore, Pittsburg, Stephens and Washita.

Gov. Kevin Stitt, along with OBO and Hilliary officials, local legislators and municipal officers, attended the event in Bray.

ARPA-SLFRF-awarded grant projects will result in 50,000 homes and businesses statewide being served with affordable and reliable high-speed internet, officials said, adding the growth of broadband access across Oklahoma is just beginning. In September, the Governing Board gave tentative approval to more than $159 million in ARPA Capital Projects Fund grants to 12 internet service providers for 50 projects in 28 counties.

Now, ISPs are competing for more than $750 million in additional grant funds through the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment program.
