There might be a good number of students in the three Lawton high schools who are like DaVion Hamilton, they thought about taking part in athletics but just didn’t have a chance to get a physical.
“I didn’t have a physical so I never went out until this season,” the senior defensive end said Monday. “I’ve had fun learning about the game of football. It does take time to learn all the defensive calls. I had watched football for a long timed but never came out.”
Does he regret that decision?
“Yes, I should have come out earlier and I might have understood football and how to play good on defense,” he said.
One asset that Hamilton had all along was a love to lift.
“I had lifted some before at a gym but up here I learned more ways to get better at lifting,” he said.
While Hamilton has gotten on the field some, his primary role has been on the scout team where he goes against the Mac offensive linemen.
“Joe (Warner) is probably the toughest guy to go against,” he said. “He is quick and really strong.”
Hamilton says he’s hoping to use his “good grades” to help him get a scholarship at Oklahoma.
“Right now, my favorite class is 5th hour English,” he said. “We are writing essays right now and my subject is electronic banking. I am having to do a good deal of research and sometimes it gets a little boring. But Dr. (Jennifer) Hanna does a good job making our class interesting.”
Hamilton has his favorite place to get a quick lunch.
“I’d go to Chick-fil-A and have a spicy chicken sandwich, waffle fries and a Sprite to drink,” he said.
Monday Hamilton and the rest of the team were learning about Noble, which the Highlanders host Friday in the regular-season finale. The team knows what is at stake, it needs to win to make the playoffs.
“Last Friday we had a good game plan and really wanted to win but didn’t make plays when we needed them,” he said. “We did keep playing and finally were able to score against them. They were probably the best team we’ve faced.”
This week Noble will be another good test.
“We need to have good practices and I know that we will be helping prepare the offensive line for what their defense will do against us,” Hamilton said. “We just have to play harder this week.”
