The Great Plains Technology Center Board of Education announced the retirement of Superintendent Clarence Fortney Tuesday evening.
After serving 45 years as its superintendent, Fortney is stepping down to “allow new leadership to guide GPTC into the future,” Fortney said in a letter to the board. The board will officially approve his resignation on Feb. 4.
Fortney began his career as a high school welding student at GPTC, proceeding to welding instructor, Adult Career Development Coordinator and Director, Deputy Superintendent and finally spending nine years as Superintendent, the letter said.
“Looking back over my many years here, what I will miss the most are the students we serve, the teachers and staff I have had the privilege of working alongside, and the businesses and communities in Comanche and Tillman Counties we support,” Fortney said. “The relationships formed, the growth we’ve achieved together, and the impact we’ve had on so many lives will remain close to my heart.”
Upon approval, his last day is set to be June 30.
