A Fort Sill unit with worldwide responsibilities welcomed a new commander Tuesday.
Col. Lourdes A. Costas, most recently military assistant to the Secretary of the Army, took command of the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade during a ceremony on the Old Post Quadrangle.
The previous brigade commander, Col. Ryan L. Schrock, is headed to Fort Bliss, Texas, as deputy commander of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
Maj. Gen. Richard A. Harrison, head of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said the brigade has excelled at all its missions, including training, deployment and combat. He noted that deployed soldiers — including those who responded to the Hamas attack on Israel last October — had been involved in the defense of a hundred missile, unmanned aerial vehicle and artillery attacks.
Schrock said he had enjoyed with a great team of soldiers and civilians who provided “the absolute best” support. He noted that the brigade has two battalions deployed across seven countries to fulfill its missions.
“This command’s been the greatest honor of my career,” he said.
