A former Lawton Correctional Facility (LCF) inmate was charged Friday with his alleged role in a brutal 2022 beating in the prison.
Felony charges were filed in Comanche County District Court against Javier Medina, 28, for aggravated assault and battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and battery, records indicate.
Robert Foust from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) was called in to investigate the July 7, 2022, beating of an inmate who had been flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City for treatment, the probable cause affidavit states. The inmate suffered multiple facial fractures including around his left orbital bone and had brain bleeding.
Foust watched prison security video that showed the inmate standing outside his cell when Medina punched him in the face, the affidavit states. The inmate fought back and six other inmates joined Medina in the assault and quickly took him down and punched, kicked and stomped him, Foust stated.
After a couple of minutes, Medina and another inmate dragged the injured man across the floor and dumped him by the pod door, according to the affidavit. Soon after, three inmates returned and started kicking, punching and stomping the injured inmate before dragging him back to the middle of the pod where Medina joined in on the continued assault, Foust stated.
Medina has prior felony convictions from Tulsa County: September 2014, two counts of second-degree burglary; and from October 2015 where he received a 27-year sentence for robbery with a firearm, records indicate. He has since been transferred to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, according to ODOC records.
The assault is one of dozens reported at the prison over the past few years and, this past week, the ODOC has called LCF “… the most violent prison in Oklahoma.”
Records indicate none of the other prisoners Foust stated were involved in the assault have been charged as of Friday.
