Maecy Fischer drilled nine treys to spark Chattanooga girls to a rousing 70-28 victory over Grandfield Saturday to send the Warriors into the winner’s bracket semifinals Thursday in the Class B basketball playoffs.
In the boys title game in District 6, Big Pasture pulled out a 50-43 victory over the host Warriors. The first half of the boys game was fast-paced with the Rangers owning a 34-30 cushion at halftime.
But in the second half points were at a premium as both teams turned up the pressure and were more deliberate at times.
While the Chatty defense was able to limit BP senior Lane Tinsley to just eight points, it was Kyle Winkler who was able to make up the slack, scoring 19 for Hunter Quickle’s club.
Cooper Loftin, Jackson Franks and Jack Denny each produced nine for the Warriors but in the end that wasn’t enough to turn back the Rangers.
Ella Mebane also broke into double figures for Chatty and six other players scored with many of those buckets coming after the press forced turnovers for the Bearcats.
Fischer, a senior who has battled a knee problem for the past two seasons, hit three treys in the first quarter as the Warriors took command. She added another trey in the second quarter, two more in the third and three in the fourth before sitting out much of the final quarter with the game well in hand.
The outcome was decided early as the Warriors scored 20 more points in the second quarter and then hung 22 more on the board in the third.
Chatty’s trap and other pressure schemes held the Bearcats to single digits in each quarter with seven in the third being the top total in the game.
Around the area there were few upsets.
Sterling girls had little trouble winning the District 4 title with a 40-32 win over Healdton.
Cyril girls took District 6 as the powerful Lady Pirates coasted, 78-16, but the score was not available at press time for the Pirates.
Velma-Alma’s talented boys team rolled to a 94-34 victory over Stonewall as Kenny Bare’s Comets seem primed to make a deep playoff run.
The favorites in District 7 in Class B had little trouble earning wins at the Dome in Geronimo. The Lady Jays earned a 40-28 victory over Ryan and the powerful Duke boys whipped Ryan, 86-20.
