DUNCAN — A felony gun-related charge against a Duncan man was dropped and he was freed from custody.
A felony charge of assault with a dangerous weapon after former felony convictions was dismissed against Antonio Joel Sanchez, 44, Stephens County District Court records indicate. Due to prior convictions, he was looking at between 20 years to life in prison if he had been convicted.
Following his May 20 preliminary hearing, the court determined there is not enough evidence to bind Sanchez over for trial for the charge, according to court documents. At the time, the district attorney’s office announced the ruling would be appealed.
Sanchez was accused of pointing a gun at his mother and threatening to shoot her during a December 2023 incident. A Barra branded BB gun was retrieved by investigators.
Sanchez has two prior felony convictions from Stephens County: August 2010, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and July 2015, second-degree burglary, records indicate.
Sanchez had been held on $50,000 bond since Dec. 7, 2023
