With the cool weather peeking in and the threats of false fall, it’s best to enjoy the autumnal weather while you have it.
One way to hop, skip and jump into nonexistent leaves is at the biannual Open Streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday. The event will be held on Southwest C Avenue from 2nd and 5th. Streets will close either late Friday or early Saturday. It’s hosted by Fit Kids, the City of Lawton and the Comanche County Memorial Hospital’s TSET Healthy Living Program. The goal is to get families active by getting them outside to play in the streets, enjoy the weather and have fun.
Sandy Foster, a member of the Planning Committee for the event, said it’s a really good opportunity to play in the streets.
“Our kids are oftentimes inside a lot,” Foster said. “When I was a kid, we were out in the streets. My mom and dad both had a wolf whistle, so when you heard that, you knew it was time to come in. Nowadays our kids are inside on video or technical devices. Their time isn’t spent being active and their health is suffering because of it. Being diagnosed with heart disease, colon cancer, these are all things that are linked back to being inactive. This is our opportunity to make being outside and being physically active fun.”
Open Streets isn’t just for the kids, its for the community as well.
“It’s a really good opportunity for us to highlight downtown Lawton,” Foster said. “We don’t really have a Main street anymore, if we did it would kind of be through that area. It’s our opportunity to recognize the heart of downtown.”
It’s also an opportunity for community members to learn about the many services available in Comanche County.
“The Taliafero Community Health Center will be there, they were out there at our last Open Streets,” Foster said. “We talk about mental health more openly and more freely. We know that our mental health has been impacted, so it’s an opportunity for the community to learn about what’s available out there.”
The event is free, open to the public and fall themed.
