“Seeing all this loss really forces you to ponder, ‘Does this only happen here, or does it advance yonder?’ Whatever happens next will not be the end, for the season of Spring will come again.”
This exceptional bit of poetry won Evie Smith from Elgin second place in the fifth-eighth grade category in the annual Wonder City Wordfest this April.
“Evie’s poem, “The Hike,” shares the wonder and beauty of the natural world here in Oklahoma,” Shaun Perkins, Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry (ROMP) executive director said. “It is full of sensory imagery and has a lovely, understated rhyming scheme that makes it a well-balanced poem.
Perkins said they received 683 entries this year, making judging very difficult.
“We had judges for each of the four categories who judged the poems anonymously, and they had tough work with so many great poems,” Perkins said.
