OKLAHOMA CITY—Elgin used its depth to pull in front in the Class 5A team race and Marlow surged to the front of the Class 3A team race by sending seven wrestlers into the finals and scoring 127.5 points Friday at the State Fairgrounds Arena.
Elgin leads 5A with 74.5 while Coweta, which Elgin beat for the title in the Dual State last weekend, is second with 70 points and Del City is third entering today’s busy final day of action at the State Fairgrounds Arena.
The Owls placed four wrestlers into the finals during the semifinals Friday evening. At 113 Hunter Jackson earned a 5-2 decision over Chickasha’s Jarrett Patty and at 190 Colyn Donnelly advanced with a tense 1-0 decision over Grove’s Laird Thompson.
At 215 Ritson Meyer was impressive with a fall in 4:31 over Carl Albert’s Brock Johnson and at 285 Jace Williams won a very important 2-1 decision in the tie-breaker.
The Owls had two wrestlers lose in the semifinals, Talon Tahdooahnippah lost by a 5-3 score at 106 and Brice Martin was beaten 7-3 in the semis at 120.
Elgin also has Braxton Antuna at 144, Kason Meyer at 150, Gabe Dittmeyer at 157, and George Tahdooahnippah at 175 remaining in the consolation bracket with T. Tahdooahnippah and Martin.
MacArthur had a solid semifinal round, advancing three into the finals. One of those is defending state champion Braden Brown who pinned Mason Buzbee of Glenpool at the 1:36 mark in the first period.
Skylar Red Elk advanced to the 165 finals by earning a 9-5 decision over Glenpool’s Trent Cole, and at 215 Trae Kibble won a 2-1 tie-breaker decision over Claremore’s Cameron Braswell.
Mac had Kaden Wallace at 138 remaining in the consolation bracket.
Cache girls advance
During Friday’s morning session, three Cache girls advanced to the championship at their respective weights and will go for State gold during Saturday’s busy day of action.
At 100 pounds Katelyn Patterson earned a wild 16-13 decision over Angela Lee of Jay to reach the finals.
Teammate CJ Landry scored a fall over Madison King of Jay, getting the pin just 35 seconds into the second period.
And the Bulldogs will also have Victorya Cox going for gold at 115 after she pulled out a tough 3-1 decision over Savanna Hendren on Pawhuska.
The Bulldogs also have a couple of wrestlers left in the consolation bracket. At 105, Laurel Hill lost by fall in the semifinals but will have a chance to rally in the consolation bracket and place.
Advancing Friday morning in the 130-pound consolations was Shiann Famero who won by fall over Kelcey Alvarado of Kiefer in 2:54.
Zoe Bennett at 140 also lost in the semifinals but will try to work her way through the consolation bracket to place.
Marlow sends seven to finals
It was a good morning of work by the Outlaws as seven wrestlers earned berths in the finals and will have a chance to claim gold today and try to push Marlow to a team title as well. The Outlaws are just in front of Blackwell, 127.5 for the Outlaws and 118 points for Blackwell, which has six wrestlers in the finals.
Tommy Miller at 113, Marcus Williams at 120, Keller Kizarr at 132, Brantz Bateman at 144, Zach Dawson at 150, Cade Gilbert at 157 and Lawson Knox at 175 all advanced with semifinal victories in the morning session.
Miller, Williams, Bateman, and Knox also picked up bonus points with falls. Kizarr earned a 9-4 decision, Dawson picked up a 10-2 major decision, and Gilbert also got an 11-3 major decision.
Jaxson Murray lost by fall in the semifinals at 126 to Vinita’s Zane Dooley who came in with a 34-1 record. Another Marlow wrestler, Brock Smith at 215, lost in the semis on a 5-4 decision.
