NEWCASTLE — A fast start by the Lady Owls propelled Elgin to a 43-24 win over the Newcastle Racers on Dec. 16.
The victory improved Elgin’s season record to 5-1 with the only loss occurring during the finals of the Boomerang Classic in Dale earlier this month.
Elgin jumped out to a 13-2 lead as post players Danika Pendley and Kelby Carter had big games with Newcastle defenders playing behind the two Lady Owls.
“We took advantage of that, and our guards kept passing the ball into them,” Elgin head coach Brett Sanders said. “Danika had a really good game.”
Newcastle made a run at Elgin’s lead in the third quarter, but the Lady Owls closed it out with an impressive fourth quarter.
The win also brought Elgin a 1-0 record in Western Conference play. The conference includes Cache, Anadarko, Elk City, Clinton, Weatherford, Blanchard, Bethany, Chickasha, and Kingfisher.
Elgin returns to the court Jan. 3 at Cache followed by the Weatherford Classic Jan. 5-7. The Lady Owls begin tournament play at 1 p.m., Jan. 5 against Tuttle.
