Texas A&M-International came to the Cameron Gym Thursday and threw a kink into the hopes of both the CU women and men who are fighting for positions in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Texas crew earned a 72-60 victory in the women’s game as the Aggies struggled again with poor shooting and 18 turnovers.
In the second game the Aggies were unable to keep up with the visitors and wound up dropping a 71-57 decision.
That puts the Cameron teams into the position of needing to sweep their final two games with Texas A&M-Kingsville coming to town Saturday as Cameron celebrates Homecoming.
Tonight the CU Athletics Hall of Fame will welcome four new members into the group during festivities on campus. The actual induction ceremony is open to anyone and will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the McCasland Ballroom in the Student Union.
Like the women, the Aggies struggled with their shooting, hitting just 3-of-19 from long range for 15.8 percent. They also struggled from the field hitting just 19-of-57 for 33.3 percent.
There were three ties and six lead changes before the Dustdevils started to slowly pull away to the victory.
Lavell Brodnex led CU with 16, Daylon Adams added 15 and Jaxon Ingram 12 but that wasn’t enough as the visitors had three players with 12 each and good support from its bench.
The visitors led at halftime, 35-33, but Brodnex gave the Aggies their last tie at 35-all with a short jumper.
From that point the Dustdevils went on a 13-0 run to take command and take the good home crowd out of the game to some extent. Ingram ended the big run but the visitors scored four quick points and never looked back.
Shooting, turnover hurt women
The CU women needed a win more that the men considering they are tied for eight with UA-Fort Smith but it was able to go on the road and earn a 59-55 victory over Western New Mexico to go to 9-11 in LSC games and move one game ahead of the CU women who fell to 8-12 and tied with the Javelinas who are coming to town Saturday for an even bigger game.
The CU women will then face Midwestern Tuesday at 5:30 in the Aggie Gym in the regular-season finale.
The Aggies ended up hitting just 3-of-17 treys for 17.6 percent while the Dustdevils were better at 9-of-27 treys for 33.3 percent.
And the Texas crew also converted the 18 CU turnovers into 18 points and also converted 13 extra-chance points.
Katie King led the Aggies with 19 points, Korie Allensworth added 16 and Shamica Smith 12 but the rest of the team added just 13 total and that wasn’t enough balance to fight back against the visitors.
