DUNCAN — A Stephens County man was charged Monday in the U.S. Western District Court for the July 19 shooting death of Kayden Cook at a Duncan apartment.
Jesse Wayne James Keenan, 18, of Duncan, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. The murder charge is punishable by up to life in prison and the manslaughter count by 15 years.
Duncan police were called to the Country Club Apartments, 2406 Country Club Road, to the shooting and found Cook unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at 9:44 p.m., the probable cause affidavit states.
Cook is an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation Tribe and the incident happened within the tribe’s reservation boundary, leading to an FBI investigation by Agent Steven Carrick.
Witnesses identified Keenan as the shooter and he was picked up at a nearby convenience store, Carrick stated. Keenan, too, has Native American blood but is not enrolled in the Choctaw Tribe.
Keenan told investigators he was with his girlfriend, she got intoxicated and that she was going to call her child’s father to beat him up, the affidavit states. After dropping her off at her home, Keenan said he grabbed his .40 caliber handgun from his home and returned to her apartment where Cook punched him in the face. He said Cook grabbed him but let go as he reached for his gun. He said he then chambered a round, pointed it at Cook and pulled the trigger, striking Cook in the side of his chest, Carrick stated.
Keenan is being held in the Grady County Detention Center.
