DUNCAN — A Duncan man is in the Stephens County jail after he was arrested for allegations he assaulted a man with a brick, brass knuckless and broken glass in May 2024.
An arrest warrant was issued Feb. 6 for Jose Zavala, 36, for a felony count of assault, battery or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, records indicate. He made his initial court appearance March 17.
Due to his prior conviction, Zavala faces between 10 years to life in prison if convicted.
Duncan Police Detective Connor Newman stated he was investigating the May 20, 2024, assault of a man who was hospitalized for his injuries.
The man said said he was at his uncle’s home with his pregnant girlfriend when Zavala ran up to him and hit him in the head with a brick and punched him with brass knuckles with a bandana wrapped around it and glass inside, the probable cause affidavit. The man fell and hurt his knee as well.
Investigators said the injured man had a large knot above his left eye and on his left check and an open, 2-inch gash along his left eyebrow and another cut above the eyebrow, Newman stated.
The man’s girlfriend said Zavala had grabbed two bricks and struck the man in the face. She said she got inside her boyfriend’s truck and that Zavala threatened to “kill her,” the affidavit states.
Zavala has prior convictions from December 2012 in Stephens County for two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, records indicate.
Held on $50,000 bond with the order to have no contact with the man or woman, Zavala returns to court at 9 a.m. May 14 for his preliminary hearing conference.
