Duncan hosts artist reception for Rae Stone

DUNCAN — Creativity flows throughout walls of a local art gallery this month as Rae Stone fills a room with her bright and colorful art pieces.

The Chisholm Trail Arts Council (CTAC) hosted an artist reception on Thursday, Oct. 12 to feature Stone’s work.

Stone said she grew up in Oklahoma City and when she went to college, she continued her passion for art.

According to Stone, she can remember her love for drawing as a child.

In college, Stone painted figures and learned the typical artwork while taking classes, but it was in her senior capstone when she decided to paint abstract and see where it goes.

She said once she figured out how to accomplish this, she may go back to figure painting.

“That was seven years ago and I haven’t gone back yet,” she said.

Stone said her work is really just an expression of color.

“My paintings don’t really mean something necessarily,” she said. “It’s just what I’m seeing and what feels interesting to me.”

According to Stone, she looks forward to seeing how the viewers interact with her work on a personal level.

“I’m mostly kind of interested to see what everybody else thinks and sees,” she said. “It’s really colorful and really easy work to approach.”

She said unlike a lot of contemporary art that may be more complicated, she feels a lot of her artwork is simply something someone can just like and think it’s pretty.

Stone noted for future artists who want to showcase their work one day, to just try.

“Just work and paint and put hours into it and eventually you’re going to find something you really love and stumble upon, but if you’re not doing it, then you’re not going to stumble upon anything,” she said. “So just put in hours and go after what you like and not necessarily what you see other people doing.”

Stone’s exhibit will remain on sale through Nov. 9.

Stone said she looks to launch her website in the next few weeks and her artwork is featured on her Instagram @RaeStone.
