DUNCAN — A Stephens County man is free on $150,000 bond after he was charged with shooting his brother.
Dakota Bridger Lokey, 29, of Comanche, made his initial appearance Wednesday in Stephens County District Court where he received a felony charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, records indicate. The crime is punishable by up to life in prison.
Law enforcement was called shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday to Lokey’s home regarding a fight that turned into a shooting. Stephens County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Picazo said he arrived to find the wounded man being loaded into an ambulance.
Lokey’s wife told Picazo that she said her brother-in-law had come over to help Lokey with some work. She said both men were very intoxicated at 6 p.m.
While eating, she said, Lokey threw “a backstrap” that hit their 3-year-old daughter in the face, the affidavit states. She took her out of the room and her brother-in-law followed to console the girl, upsetting Lokey, according to the deputy. A physical fight between the men ensued.
The men stopped fighting and went outside onto the patio where they began arguing again, she said. Lokey threatened to shoot the man several times if he didn’t leave, according to the affidavit. While the woman called 911, she said, she heard the men arguing in the bedroom and saw them struggling over a gun after the brother-in-law asked Lokey, “What, are you going to shoot me?” She said she heard two gunshots and found the wounded man lying on the ground.
The woman said this wasn’t the first time Lokey had threatened to shoot the man, the affidavit states. The woman said he keeps two pistols on the top of a bookshelf in their room.
While searching the bedroom where the shooting happened, the deputy found a bullet on the floor and where another bullet had hit a picture frame, according to the affidavit.
Lokey posted bond Wednesday with the order to have no contact with the wounded man or access to firearms. Records indicate he returns to court at 9 a.m. March 13, 2024, for his preliminary hearing conference.
