GRANDFIELD — The driver of a pickup that crashed into a Grandfield Public Schools bus in December 2023 has been identified.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Kenny Hill, 59, of Manitou, died at the scene from his injuries sustained in the Dec. 11, 2023 wreck on U.S. 70, 5 miles west of Grandfield in Tillman County.
Hill was driving a Ford F-150 pickup that crashed head first into the school bus carrying high school students to Great Plains Technology Center’s Frederick campus for classes. The crash caused the pickup to burst into flames. Witnesses said a pair of farmers used chains to pull the bus away from the truck so it to wouldn’t catch fire.
The bus driver, James E. Jackson, 35, of Grandfield, had to be extricated from the wreckage by Grandfield firefighters using the Hurst tool, Trooper Scott Hazle reported. He was admitted to United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas, in critical condition with trunk, leg and internal/external trunk injuries.
Ten students were also taken to United Regional Hospital and Comanche County Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries, according to the report.
The cause of the wreck and drivers’ conditions at the time of the wreck remain under investigation.
