ANADARKO — The driver involved in a fatal Sunday afternoon wreck in Caddo County has been criminally charged with leaving the scene.
Wallace Cleveland Clay, 50, of Owasso, made his initial appearance Wednesday in Caddo County District Court where he was charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of a fatality accident, records indicate. The crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Clay was driving a Chevrolet Malibu northbound when he struck and killed Kreshardra MeKellie Willhoite, 46, of Norman, around 3:10 p.m. Sunday as she and her brother were crossing Interstate 44; her family’s vehicle had broken down and they were trying to locate a tire, the probable cause affidavit states. She died from head, internal trunk and external injuries, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Chickasha police stopped Clay about 15 miles away following the incident.
Clay told police he’d been on the phone with his insurance company and believed he’d struck a bird, the affidavit states. Tests concluded the blood on the Malibu was human.
Free on $20,000 bond, Clay returns to court at 9 a.m. Jan. 16, 2025, for his preliminary hearing conference.
