Deevers beats Bush to take Oklahoma Senate 32 seat

Southwest Oklahoma has a new state senator.

Elgin pastor and businessman Dusty Deevers is the new Senate District 32 senator, after beating Democratic challenger Larry Bush in Tuesday’s general election. Deevers, a Republican, won 3,104 votes, or 55.48 percent of the ballots cast. Bush, a Lawton insurance company owner, won 2,491 votes, or 44.52 percent of the ballots cast.

Officials with the Oklahoma State Senate indicated that Deevers would be sworn into office next week, meaning he will be ready for the 2024 legislative session that begins Feb. 5, 2024.

Deevers is filling the unexpired term of former Sen. John Michael Montgomery, who resigned his seat Aug. 1 to become president/CEO of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce. Because Montgomery had just been re-elected to a new term in November 2022, Deevers will be completing almost three years of Montomery’s remaining four-year term.

Deevers has been pastor of Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Elgin since 2016, and also is CEO of Deevers Properties. During his campaign, he said he wants to blend his conservative and Christian values to serve residents of District 32, while using his business background to help restore the state’s potential as an economic powerhouse.

Senate District 32 includes northern and western Comanche County, to include the area of Lawton north of West Lee Boulevard to Southwest 38th Street, then north of Southwest F Avenue to Southwest 3rd Street.
