Cyril girls dominated the fourth quarter to edge Allen, 44-35, Friday night to claim the Class Area II title at Chickasha High School before a jam-packed crowd.
The Lady Pirates of Coach Shane McLemore were having trouble scoring until the final eight minutes when they outscored Allen, 17-7, to get the victory and advance to State.
Hadley Gibson led the offense with 19 and Khloe Goombi added 10 more as the Pirates earned the win and will get a good seed at State.
In the Class A Area III girls title game, Empire advanced to state as well with a 43-34 victory in another tough defensive game.
Several other are teams weren’t able to take the big step as Geronimo and Mt. View-Gotebo girls both fell in title games last night and will come back tonight to try and punch their ticket to State.
The Lady Blue Jays were handed a 54-34 loss to powerful Hammon during action at Noble High School Friday night. The Lady Jays will return tonight at 6 p.m. to face Turner for the consolation title and a berth at State. Turner survived Friday with a 52-40 victory over Buffalo Valley.
Mt. View-Gotebo girls lost a 51-49 heart-breaker to Lookeba-Sickles in the Class B Area IV finals at Bridge Creek. The Lady Tigers will return to the same gym tonight at 6 p.m. to face Varnum for a State berth. Varnum beat Chattanooga, 42-36, in the afternoon session.
And on the Class B boys side, Fort Cobb-Broxton boys worked their way to within a win of another State bid by beating Erick, 40-37.
Erick tried to slow down the pace at the start of the fourth quarter but the Mustangs of Coach Scott Hines decided to work the ball and only take good shots.
Down the stretch talented Kray Rogers hit 3-of-4 big free throws to finally seal the victory. The Mustangs will return to the Noble Gym tonight at 7:30 p.m. to face Wilson, which lost to Granite in the title game Friday, 70-65. Granite had knocked Fort Cobb-Broxton into the consolation bracket last week in the regional finals, 54-48.
The Mustangs are the defending Class B State boys champions.
