The City of Lawton’s Arts and Humanities Division and the McMahon Auditorium Authority are excited to announce the commencement of the nomination process for the 2024 Lawton Cultural Awards and the Art Purchase Competition Award. These prestigious awards have long been a celebration of our community’s outstanding contributions to the arts and humanities.
Since its inception in 1971, the Lawton Cultural Awards have been a symbol of recognition and appreciation for individuals who have dedicated themselves to enriching the culture of our city. In 2021, with the absorption of the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council into the McMahon Auditorium Authority, the awards evolved and expanded to include three distinct categories:
Citizen in the Arts and/or Humanities: Recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and contributions to the cultural life of Lawton.
Educator in the Arts and/or Humanities: Celebrating educators who have significantly impacted the arts and humanities through their teaching and mentorship.
Business/Organization in the Arts and/or Humanities: Honoring businesses or organizations that have shown outstanding support and dedication to the arts and humanities in Lawton.
The Art Purchase Competition Award, sponsored by the McMahon Auditorium Authority, provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their talents. The McMahon Auditorium Authority Arts and Humanities Committee will serve as the jury, selecting three pieces of artwork from one artist. These chosen artworks will be presented to the three winners of the 2024 Lawton Cultural Awards, and the artist will receive a prize of $900 for their three pieces.
The nomination process is now open, and we encourage all members of the Lawton community to participate. Nominations can be submitted by visiting SWOKarts.com and filling out the nomination forms. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
This is a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate the individuals, educators, businesses, organizations, and artists who have left a mark on the cultural life of Lawton.
