The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration Committee of the Cameron Campus Ministry is asking residents to nominate candidates for the 2024 MLK Humanitarian Service Award.
The award is presented to a citizen of Lawton who: exemplifies the teaching, life, and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; promotes community involvement among persons from different social, economic, racial/ethnic and geographical backgrounds; and is committed to humanitarian service and the practice of non-violence.
The award will be presented at the Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration Banquet, set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15, 2024, in the Hilton Garden Conference Center, 135 NW 2nd. The guest speaker for the 40th anniversary banquet will be justice activist Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu, daughter of world justice leader and 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Nominations may be received to Cameron Campus Ministry, P. O. Box 3436, Lawton, Oklahoma 73502 or by email to the committee at [email protected] by 5 p.m. Jan. 3.
“While we believe there are many citizens of our area who are deserving of such an award, the committee has limited the award to only one this year,” said the Rev. Phil Jones, committee member.
Previous recipients over the past 40 years are not eligible for this year’s award.
