In The Lawton Constitution’s Aug. 1 story about the City of Lawton receiving a Notice of Violation because of ammonia levels in its wastewater effluent found in East Cache Creek, city officials said they were not surprised by the news of ammonia. Rather, they were surprised by the fish kill that resulted because high levels of ammonia in effluent in the past did not result in fish kills. In addition, data from aquatic bio-monitoring did not support the grounds for a fish kill, because two species sensitive to ammonia were not negatively impacted in that test, city officials said.
