After last week’s frigid weather which delayed the Class 2A, A and B playoffs by a day, that change puts even more games on the schedule this week, starting Monday with the completion of those regionals win some dandy matchups.
Tuesday the largest schools get into the act with 6A and 5A girls taking the court around the state for the first two games of their regionals. Thursday will be the busiest day of the year with 6A and 5A boys regionals opening along with regionals in 4A and 3A, plus Area Tournaments in Class 2A, A and B getting under way.
Here is a brief rundown of next week’s big-school regionals as well as updates on the regionals that will conclude Monday.
Class 5A regionals
The only Lawton team hosting a 5A regional will be the Lawton High boys who will take on Santa Fe South Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Class 5A west boys Regional 3.
The Wolverines enter the playoffs with a 22-3 record while Santa Fe South comes in at 3-13. The other two teams in that regional are Elgin and Western Heights that will battle at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the right to face the Wolverines.
MacArthur boys have had a solid season but have drawn a tough regional, visiting Del City. Mac faces Classen SAS Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Del City faces Guymon at 6 p.m.
Altus and Duncan also have tough draws with Altus facing host El Reno at 6 p.m. Thursday in El Reno, while Duncan heads to Carl Albert to face the powerful Titans at 6 p.m.
In the 5A girls playoffs, Duncan and Elgin will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the El Reno Regional, and in the Del City regional MacArthur and Altus battle at 7:30 p.m. LHS girls will face Guymon at Classen SAS on Tuesday.
Class A regionals
Several area teams will be playing Monday in regional title games in which the winner of those matchups will be just one victory away from a State Tournament berth and will play Friday night.
In Class A, Area II, Empire girls will mix it up against Amber-Pocasset at 6 p.m. Monday at Alex High and on the boys side of that regional, it will be Sterling facing Çentral High Monday at 7:30 p.m. for that title.
In Class A, Area III, both Cyril teams will be playing Monday at Stonewall for regional titles. The powerful Lady Pirates face Wright City at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. the Pirates battle Wright City. The Pirates survived a tough challenge from Velma-Alma Thursday but the Comets were able to earn a 56-38 victory Saturday over Savanna to get a step closer to an Area berth.
In Class B, Area II which begins Thursday at Cache High School, the focus Monday will be at Chattanooga where the host Lady Warriors meet Mt. View-Gotebo at 6 p.m. for that title. In the boys games it will be Duke and Granite at 7:30 for that title.
Duke trailed for much of Friday’s semifinal against Big Pasture but Duke was able to hit a couple of big buckets late to earned a 54-48 decision. Big Pasture rallied after the tough loss to Duke to edge Mt. View-Gotebo, 63-62, in a dandy battle of area clubs.
And in Class B at the Hammon Regional, Fort Cobb-Broxton boys lost a 61-55 to Hammon, which will force the Mustangs to win five straight games if they have their sites set on another trip to State.
