A Christmas eve fire at a Lawton motel sent one person to the hospital and remains under investigation.
Lawton fire crews were called at 11:37 p.m. Tuesday night to a reported structure fire at the Motel 6, 202 E. Lee.
While crews were responding to the scene, dispatch updated crews that the room on fire was believed to be occupied, according to Caitlin Gatlin, Communications and Marketing Manager for the City of Lawton. When crews arrived, they found fire and smoke coming from a second-floor room at the motel.
The first arriving crew was able to quickly knock the fire down and locate a victim in the room, Gatlin said. Firefighters determined the victim was breathing and had a pulse and joined personnel from Kirks EMS to treat the victim at the scene.
The victim was transported in serious condition to Comanche County Memorial Hospital by Kirks EMS with assistance from Lawton Firefighters.
The Lawton Fire Marshal’s Office is now investigating the cause of the fire, Gatlin said.
According to Lawton Police Department incident reports, the fire is being investigated as a possible arson.
