Chattanooga boys drilled 10 3-point buckets as the Warriors coasted to a 79-29 victory over Cement Thursday afternoon as the Jeff Hart Memorial Invitational Tournament began at the Great Plains Coliseum.
The Chatty girls also reached the winner’s bracket semifinals by beating Cement, 49-20, in the first game on Thursday’s eight-game schedule.
With the wins the Chatty teams will now play in tonight’s semifinals with the girls facing Dewar at 7 p.m. and the boys meeting Navajo at 8:20. Dewar girls beat Central High, 46-35, while Navajo boys edged Burns Flat-Dill City, 57-52 in the closest contest during the eight-game schedule Thursday.
The Warriors broke out to a 28-3 lead after one quarter and then coach Billy Karr did his best to use his bench in the second half as the Bulldogs just didn’t have enough firepower to stay with the deeper Warriors.
Jackson Franks led Chatty with 16 but Evan Wauqua and Michael Paddyaker added 13 and 12, respectively, to provide plenty of balance. Franks hit four treys and Wauqua added three as the Warriors got their long-range shots to fall early and often.
It was more of the same for the Chatty girls as they got 10 points each from Makayla Burns and Jaciklayne Cassell, plus six other girls also scored for the Lady Warriors who didn’t shoot well from long range but they forced a host of Cement turnovers and totally dominate in the paint as well.
And the Lady Warriors played solid defense down the stretch, holding Cement scoreless in the third quarter and then to just four in the final eight minutes. The Chatty press and 1-3-1 defense kept Cement bottled up throughout the game and the pressure forced a rash of turnovers.
Walters girls, boys advance
Walters advanced both its teams Thursday in the first round of the Slick Hills Invitational at the Apache Events Center.
The Blue Devils were able to turn away Vanoss, 48-40, behind a 23-point outburst from Ray Carter. Both teams played well defensively and while Vanoss had a 10-9 scoring edge in the fourth quarter, Walters made some clutch free throws including a 4-of-4 effort from Carter in the final eight minutes. Walters boys go against host Apache which beat Hollis, 53-33, in Thursday’s late game.
The Walters girls had an easier time over Hollis, pulling away for a 50-23 decision. Balance was the key for the Lady Blue Devils as Kynlee Edgemon scored 15, Rainey King 1 and Karlee Crabtree 12. Next up today at 4:20 in the semifinals the Walters girls will face Hobart which beat Big Pasture, 42-29.
Sterling girls advance
Sterling girls Black Diamond Classic Thursday as the girls edged Binger-Oney, 31-23, in an old-fashioned defensive battle.
Ashlyn Clift led the way for Sterling with 10 points but on this day it was the defense that led the way.
“It was a tough defensive battle all the way,” Sterling girls coach Jayson Wilson said. “Both teams were not hitting many shots in the early going and both defenses played well and both teams had to work for every point.”
The Tigers will battle Geronimo today at 4:20 in the semifinals in a game that will match two of the teams that will be fighting for a high seed for the Comanche County Tournament that is quickly approaching.
