Chattanooga girls used a pair of huge 3-point buckets from Maecy Fischer in the final four minutes as the Lady Warriors held on for a 49-34 victory over Mt. View-Gotebo to get within one victory of a berth in next week’s Class A State Tournament.

Fischer had her shooting touch early in the game at the Chatty Gym hitting two treys in a span of 1:02 to arrange an early 18-3 lead for the Warriors.

But the Tigers still had something left to say about the outcome, slipping along the baseline for three straight layups to make it 21-11 with 3:00 left in the half which had Chatty leading 27-15.

Turnover then made matters much tighter as the Tigers went inside again to slice the lead to just three, 34-31, with 0:52 left in the third quarter and when both teams failed to convert on their next possessions, that’s how it went after three quarters.

Quickly the Warriors took command, first as Makayla Burns slipped inside for a layup and Ella Mebane drilled a trey after Chatty worked the offense for more than a minute to find her open for a bucket that made it 39-31 and left the home fans somewhat relieved.

Then came the dagger as Fischer sank another long trey with 4:00 remaining to push the lead to 43-34. And for good measure the junior sharp-shooter drilled another trey with 1:04 to really put it away.

Chatty girls will now prepare for Friday’s Area II title game against Hammon which crushed Canton, 51-18, Saturday. That Area title game will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Bridge Creek High School.

Cyril teams split

There was a mild upset Monday in Class A, Area III where Cyril’s girls were sent to the consolation bracket by Wright City by a score of 52-49. Cyril was down by one late in the game but was unable to get a shot to drop.

Maybe the best game of the night was between Cyril and Wright City which went to overtime as both teams traded buckets throughout the game. But finally the Pirates were able to get wild 75-71 win to advance to the Area Tournament title game Thursday at Noble.

While the night games Monday were key regional championships that really give the winners a golden chance to make state, there were important elimination games in the afternoon for numerous area teams.

Walters girls lived another day, beating Hobart, 54-50, Monday in 2A regional action at Hinton. The Lady Devils will play Thursday at 1 p.m. at Chickasha High School needing three straight wins to make state.

Sterling boys win title

Sterling boys claimed a Class A Regional title with a 43-38 victory over Central High.

And the Sterling girls kept their title hopes alive Monday afternoon, pulling out a tough 31-28 victory over another area club in Navajo. The Lady Tigers will make the short drive to Cache Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. to face another area team, Empire, which lost by a 49-25 score against Amber-Pocasset in the title game of the Union City Regional.

Velma-Alma boys bounced back from the tough 58-56 loss to Cyril Friday to win two straight to move into a Class A Area at Noble starting Thursday. The Comets beat Stonewall, 56-35, Monday afternoon two days after routing Savanna, 56-38.

Apache girls move ahead

One of the most amazing playoffs is that of Apache girls who got a second chance after a protest was lodged by school officials that the Lady Warriors were shorted two points in a district tournament title game against The Academy. The OSSAA after looking at video of the game agreed that the final score was wrong and that in addition no official book was being kept and thus gave the Warriors a 43-42 win.

While Amy Meriweather’s club was beaten by Canton on Friday in a regional title game in Class A, Area IV, they came back to beat Southwest Covenant, 57-54, and Monday they got the offens going with a 71-61 victory over Arapaho/Butler.Apache now makes the drive to Stroud for a 1 p.m. game Thursday to get three more wins to reach state.

In Class B Geronimo girls were able to advance to next week after losing a tough 46-38 setback to long-time rival Chattanooga Friday. The Blue Jays edged Tipton, 58-52, on Saturday and dispatched Grandfield, 50-40 Monday afternoon. Geronimo girls will battle Canton at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bridge Creek.

In afternoon boys consolation, turnovers and missed shots foiled Big Pasture’s bid to reach the Area Tournament as Erick rallied for a 70-66 victory over the Rangers thus ending their season.

In Class B boys action, Fort Cobb-Broxton advanced to a Class B Area at Bridge Creek by turning away Boise City, 59-52, in the consolation finals at the Hammon Regional.
