Cameron’s basketball teams were eager to start 2025 with a pair of home wins but Texas Woman’s University and Dallas Baptist men came away with victories Friday night in the Aggie Gym.
The CU men had a golden opportunity to get a win but DBU was able to convert from the field with 1.6 seconds remaining and the Aggies didn’t have time to counter and dropped a tough 78-77 decision.
DBU has been on a hot streak, bolting out to a 13-2 overall record and a 5-1 Lone Star Conference mark. The CU men dropped to 3-9 and 0-6 in LSC action.
Cameron women ran into a buzz saw as TWU rolled to a 66-47 victory to push its record to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in LSC action. Cameron women dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the Lone Star Conference.
Both CU teams will try and regroup Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against UT-Tyler.
Friday the Aggies used some hot shooting from Aaron Jacob to take DBU to the wire as he produced 26 points including a sizzling 6-of-8 effort from long range.
Lavell Brodnex snagged a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling down 10 rebounds. Jaxon Ingram added 8 points and 8 rebounds and Mason Dunlap chipped in 10 points.
The Aggies had a good shooting effort, sinking 29-of-53 shots from the field for 54.7 percent. CU struggled at the free throw line, though, hitting just 9-of-16 for 56.3 percent.
Shamica Smith continued to be the top scorer for the CU women as she dominated the boards, recording a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while also adding four blocks.
Grace Alverson contributed 11 points, including three three-pointers, and dished out 4 assists. Mercedes Mancha added 10 points.
Cold shooting continued to be an issue as the Aggies hit just 18-of-66 shots from the field for 27.3 percent and they continue to struggle from long range, hitting just 6-of-29 for a paltry 20.7 percent.
