Cameron women put on another strong outing Saturday, winning their fourth game over the past five outings after a sluggish start to the season.
It was a big day as the CU programs hosted Homecoming and Senior Day before a good crowd at the Aggie Gym. The CU women opened the doubleheader by jumping out to a 34-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in route to an 86-58 victory.
The Cameron men had a much tougher test but ended up pulling out a 102-86 victory with another huge game from Lavell Brodnex who poured in 41 points, his career high.
Brodnex saved his best game for Senior Day, hitting 14-of-20 shots for a sizzling 70 percent figure from the field, hitting 2-of-5 treys and drilling 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Jaxon Ingram added 15 points and Zaveion Okoh added 14. Plus seven other Aggies scored to proved excellent balance.
Reserve Brodie McWhinney had the honor of getting the Aggies to the century mark, sinking a layup with 2:09 remaining in the game.
CU women on late run
The early barrage by the Aggies including 13-of-23 shooting from the field and a 4-of-11 effort from long range to stagger the Sul Ross crew. The Aggies added 24 more in the second quarter and then were able to make sure that the visitors weren’t going to mount a comeback.
The Aggie women had great balance with four players making double figures with Shamika Smith leading the way with 19 points. Madison Griggs added 15, Grace Alverson chipped in 14 and Alannah Gillespie scored 11. Five other Aggies scored at least five points in the big Lone Star Conference victory.
Kennedy Cummings and Smith also grabbed 11 rebounds as the Aggies grabbed 49 rebounds, nine of those on the offensive end.
In addition to shooting better in recent games, the Aggies also had an edge in bench points as well as points in the paint.
Thursday the CU women dispatched Western New Mexico, 90-56, with a balanced offensive effort and tough defense. Grave Alverson and Madison Griggs each scored 19 points, including combining to drill 9-of-13 three-point buckets.
Steady Shamica Smith controlled the paint with 15 points and 5 rebounds, showing her dominance inside. And Kennedy Cummings had an all-around performance, contributing 9 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists.
After shooting woes earlier in the season, Jeff Mahoney’s club has been much improved, hitting 13of-30 Thursday for a solid 43 percent.
Cameron’s third-quarter explosion proved to be the difference, where they knocked down 14 field goals, including 7 three-pointers, to put the game out of reach.
The Aggies’ aggressive defense also played a huge role, forcing turnover after turnover and converting them into 39 points.
Men beat Western
Cameron’s men’s team had a big outing against Western New Mexico as well Thursday, rolling to a 98-74 victory.
Jaxon Ingram led the charge with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, adding 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Miles Gurske was on fire from beyond the arc, scoring 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 4 three-pointers.
Lavell Brodnex delivered a strong all-around performance with 17 points, 5 rebounds, while shooting an impressive 6-of-11 from the field.
Aaron Jacob added 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal, providing a spark off the bench.
The Aggies also shot well, drilling 35-of-72 (48.6%) from the field. The Aggies also made free throws at an 84 percent clip, 21-of-25.
The Aggies were relentless on defense, recording 6 blocks and 10 steals, which they converted into 22 points off turnovers.
